This move is part of a larger regional project, the NSF Critical Materials Crossroads Engine, which aims to reduce the U.S.'s reliance on foreign sources for critical minerals and materials. The project, funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF) with an initial $15 million, is a collaborative effort involving over 260 partners, including Lincoln University, the University of Missouri-Kansas City (UMKC), and the University of Missouri. The primary focus is on producing metals and advanced materials used in various technologies, such as batteries, medical devices, aircraft engine parts, and semiconductors.
The centerpiece of this initiative is the Employment Academy, a two-semester online certificate program designed to prepare nontraditional students for careers in the critical materials industry. The academy will offer a range of training programs, with a particular emphasis on advanced manufacturing. Darius Watson, the dean of the College of Professional Studies and assistant provost for academic innovation at Lincoln University, envisions the academy as a catalyst for workforce development in the region. Watson highlights the importance of collaboration with UMKC, stating that it accelerates the academy's vision by connecting learners with high-demand careers in the critical materials industry.
The Employment Academy's curriculum will be tailored to meet the evolving needs of the critical materials ecosystem, encompassing fields such as manufacturing, logistics, research, and engineering.
