Taiwan's economy is experiencing a boom, with GDP growth projected to reach 10.16% in 2026, a significant increase from the previous year. However, this growth is not being felt by the average Taiwanese citizen. The semiconductor industry, which employs around 300,000 people, is driving the growth, with TSMC leading the way. The company approved a record NT$206.14 billion in employee performance bonuses and profit-sharing compensation in 2025, a 46.6% increase from the previous year. This has led to higher average wages, but the benefits are not being felt by the majority of the population. The average regular monthly wage in the first quarter of 2026 was NT$48,706, but 69.95% of wage earners received less than the average pay, the highest proportion recorded since the statistics were first compiled. The wage gap between industries is also substantial, with the average monthly wage in the electronic components manufacturing industry being NT$57,710, compared to NT$34,524 in accommodation and food services and NT$37,172 in other services. The wealth gap is even more stark, with the wealthiest 20% of households having an average net worth of NT$51.33 million, while the poorest 20% had an average net worth of just NT$770,000. The housing market is also unaffordable for many, with the price-to-income ratio standing at 9.32 nationwide, and 14.62 in Taipei. The government is trying to spread the success of the semiconductor industry to other sectors, but the disparities between industries and society are deepening. Taiwan's economy is vulnerable because its industrial landscape is overly concentrated in a handful of sectors, and the gaps in growth and wages between traditional industries and the high-tech sector remain wide. The country's experience serves as a warning to Korea to beware of the 'average trap' - the illusion of strong headline growth that diverges sharply from economic conditions experienced on the ground.
